Jan Vermaning studied trumpet at the Groningen College of Music under Freddy Grin and Auke van der Merk, and conducting under Zsolt Deaky. He is currently sub-principal trumpet with the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra in Groningen. In 2001 he set up the Fresian Wind Ensemble (which he conducts) and the Chamber Music Consort with which he has given many chamber music and larger symphonic performances. He has also had conducting lessons from Jacek Kaspszyk and Viktor Liberman. Alongside regular solo performances and freelance work with various Dutch symphony orchestras he plays trumpet with ensembles such as Dutch Brass, the Riza Trio and Ensemble ‘Aparte’.
Since 1996, under the name ‘Op Maat’ (concert and artist management agency), he organises and manages diverse cultural events. ‘Op Maat’ is also an advice and information bureau for artists, ensembles, workshops, festivals etc.
In April 2007 Jan, together with Anita Jongerman (leader) founded the National Symphonic Chamber Orchestra. This orchestra is set to give chamber music concerts, make recordings and accompany choirs, together with the prospect of both Dutch and World premieres.
